what we believe

We are a Lutheran, Christian family of faith. We believe following Jesus is the best way to know and experience God and God’s love. We follow Jesus by welcoming, worshiping and witnessing in the way we think Jesus would - with love first. We believe in God’s love for all - no matter who they love, what their politics are, how much money they have or where they come from. Everyone is welcome in God’s family here at Calvary.

We like the Bible, we like it a lot. We take it seriously because, as Martin Luther taught, the Bible is the cradle which holds the Christ. In the stories of faith and faithful people we have from the Bible we learn how to love in God’s way (unconditionally), how to pray and serve like Jesus (humbly and expectantly), how to live in the Spirit (peacefully and powerfully). In worship we follow the Narrative Lectionary - a series of weekly readings that each September begins in Genesis (the first book of the Bible) and continues through the whole biblical story to Jesus’ death and resurrection at Easter. After Easter we read about the early church and how Paul and other apostles taught and spread the Good News about Jesus. Each year we take a tour through the whole Bible - which brings us closer to God and helps join us into God’s people across all times and ages.

We believe we are called by God’s love to share love - to care for neighbors near and far, as Jesus would. We want to serve humbly, like Jesus, being as open to hear our neighbor’s story as we are to share our own. We want to make a difference for God - not so that people join our church - but so that all people’s lives are safer, healthier, steadier and more whole.
